While You Were Away

While you were away
I walked through shadows disguised as glass
I danced alone
I learned that I could
feel,
be just as I am

While you were away
freedom delivered me to heaven.
I found my voice
spoke for myself,
enjoyed the words
said them again and again

While you were away
a taste for whiskey developed on my tongue
I devoured raw flesh,
felt another
kind of emotion
swaying on my feet,
balancing on hope
I can see there is a way

While you were away
laughter reigned,
my heart expanded
anxiety lifted, floated away
I discovered my strength

While you were away,
I finally became me
